How to Set Up Countdown and Anniversary Widgets

Put birthdays, exams or travel dates on your home screen. Check remaining days, elapsed days, inclusive counting, repeat rules and reminders in MuseScreen.

Choose what the date should tell you

For an exam or departure, you usually want days remaining. For a habit or anniversary, elapsed time may be more useful. A birthday often needs a yearly repeat. Decide which question to answer before choosing a design; a prominent number is not necessarily a countdown.

The important-date record holds the name, date and repeat settings. The widget design chooses the record, fields and layout. Keeping these separate means changing a font does not require creating another event, and changing a date does not require rebuilding every design that uses it.

Create and check the important date

  1. In Profile → My Content, open Important Dates and add a record.
  2. Enter a recognizable name and the date, checking the calendar type offered by the form.
  3. Choose the repeat rule for the occasion. A one-time exam differs from a yearly birthday; the word “birthday” in the name does not configure recurrence.
  4. Save and reopen the record to check the date and its next occurrence.

See Important dates and day counting for record controls. Calendar options depend on the current form. A lunar birthday’s Gregorian date in one year should not simply be reused for every later year.

Connect the design to your record

  1. Open a widget preview that uses important dates and select your saved record in its content settings.
  2. In the editor, check that the title and number refer to the same event. Do not retain a sample event name while only changing the count.
  3. Inspect the relevant text layer’s source, field and format, choosing remaining or elapsed time as needed.
  4. Save and prepare the design, then follow the iPhone placement guide or Android home screen steps.

If the title is right but the count belongs to something else, inspect the source used by each layer. Replacing a shared source also affects other layers that use it. See Dynamic content for the controls.

Check the count with fixed dates

Take a non-repeating event on October 21, 2026. If today is October 18, there are 3 calendar days remaining; on October 21 itself the count is 0. A design using raw remaining days can show a negative value after the event. A relative-text design may instead describe time that has passed. Read the label before interpreting the number.

For a second example, from October 18 to October 19, 1 day has elapsed. If the starting date is counted as day 1, October 19 is day 2. A difference of one can reflect the counting convention rather than an incorrect date.

The important-date list’s day-display option does not automatically change a widget’s fields or format. Check the counting explanation, date, time zone and repeat rule before troubleshooting. Do not move the real date by a day to compensate.

Check reminders separately from the display

A desktop label showing “3 days left” does not establish that a notification has been scheduled. Check the event’s reminder settings and notification authorization if you need an alert; see Missing reminders. These day-count examples do not describe an alarm or a timer that counts hours and seconds.

Compare the app result with the desktop title and number after saving. System updates can be delayed. If the number stays unchanged after midnight, confirm the record and design first, then follow Refresh troubleshooting. Keep the event record while investigating.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the countdown one day shorter than my calculation?

Check whether you included today and whether the display shows remaining days, elapsed days or an inclusive day number. Then check the original date, time zone and recurrence. The list display option and the widget format are separate settings.

Will changing the date affect other widgets?

Designs using the same important-date record read its updated content. Copying a design does not copy personal records, so the copy may still use the original event.

Does a birthday repeat every year automatically?

Check the record’s repeat rule rather than inferring it from the name. For a lunar birthday, also verify the calendar type and next occurrence.

Why has my countdown become negative?

Raw remaining days can be negative once a non-repeating event has passed. Confirm the date, then decide whether to keep the anniversary, change its presentation or choose an appropriate repeat rule.
