How to Set Different iPhone Lock Screen and Home Screen Wallpapers

Set a downloaded photo as your iPhone wallpaper. Learn about wallpaper pairs, home screen customization, cropping, and blur for backgrounds that suit each screen.

Applies to

iPhones with the Add New Wallpaper and wallpaper pair interface. This guide covers static photos and does not require Spatial Scenes or other model-specific effects.

Based on official documentation, without hands-on testing of every device. Styling and troubleshooting tips are editorial suggestions.

Save the image before opening settings

Check that the image is in the Photos app. If a web download is only in Files, open it and use the share menu to save it to Photos before continuing.

Web previews are for quick browsing; enlarging a screenshot cannot add detail. Check the wallpaper detail page for available download sizes, or explore HD wallpapers in the MuseScreen app.

Set a new lock screen wallpaper

  1. Open Settings, go to Wallpaper, and add a new wallpaper.
  2. Choose Photos and select the image you saved.
  3. Adjust its position and size in the preview, check that the time does not cover the subject, then add it.
  4. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use a matching background on both screens, or Customize Home Screen to adjust them separately.

Use another home screen image or change blur

In home screen customization, you can choose another photo or a color background. Try Blur to make app icons stand out. Compare the lock screen and home screen previews before saving.

Styling tip: keep the main subject on the lock screen and use a quieter composition on the home screen. The images do not have to match exactly; related colors can tie them together.

Check three areas after setup

Check the time first, then the notification area, and finally the home screen icons and widgets. If the subject is cropped out, reopen wallpaper editing and reposition it. Avoid excessive zoom just to fill the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why did both screens get the same wallpaper?

Choosing a wallpaper pair applies a matching set to both screens. To set them separately, edit the home screen in Wallpaper settings or choose Customize Home Screen when adding a wallpaper.

Why does the image look blurry?

Check whether home screen Blur is enabled, then confirm you used the original image rather than a web screenshot. Zooming in too far can also reduce visible detail.
