Change display with conditions

Use a comparison, branches and a default result to respond to changing data.

Updated

What a condition contains

A condition reads a value, checks a rule and chooses a result when it matches. A default result covers cases where no branch matches. Available results depend on the property, such as text or color.

Displayed content and the condition can use different sources. A text layer can show the time while its color depends on charging state.

Example: color the date while charging

  1. Select a text layer. In Content, choose Date & Time as its content type and keep its date source.
  2. Open Conditions, add a property rule for Content color, then choose Add condition.
  3. In Choose data, select the battery charging-state field. Set the comparison to Equals and the value to Charging. This adds an independent battery source without replacing the date source.
  4. Set the matching color, for example blue, and tap Done in the color editor. Keep a readable ordinary text color for Otherwise.
  5. Return to the condition card and tap Apply. Check that the unapplied-change indicator disappears, then save the design.
  6. Reopen the design, select the same text layer and check Conditions. The date binding, charging comparison and both colors should remain. Undo and redo let you check the complete rule you just applied.

The text still shows the date; charging state controls its color. After saving, check the result while the device is charging and unplugged. Data and Home Screen updates may be delayed.

Branches and defaults

Review branches in their displayed order and avoid overlapping rules. Keep a readable default for unmatched cases instead of designing only the successful state.

Check charging, not charging and temporarily unavailable data. Use a separate test record when testing personal content rather than changing important records.

If the rule does not work

Check the selected property, appearance, comparison source, field and value type. The condition source may differ from the text source.

A fixed-value edit may change only the default case when a rule supplies the value. To make it always fixed, explicitly edit that property's rule while preserving other rules. See dynamic content.
